Abstract
─ The modernization of Japan was based on materialism and technology. In Sapporo Agri-
cultural School, however, it could provide democracy, internationalism and science through Protes-
tantism as the the spirit of modernization. There were two contributors from here through religion and
education. Kanzo UCHIMURA found the value of Japanese “bushido” to be equivalent to Western
traditional religion. He thought that absolute peace based on the Bible and policy of minority power
would bring real peace and prosperity. On the other hand, Inazo NITOBE who was a writer of
"BUSHIDO", found there was something common in Japanese traditional morals and Protestantism
and left a great mark through education and international activities. Both of them had to struggle
greatly for peace because it was the time that led to the "Dark Showa era" with the building up of
empire, control of national thought, and increased military political power. But they did not give up
and showed their courage in their struggle against that world. Although they have long passed away,
their ideas are still alive, and embody a universal truth. Some people who learned and followed them
also contributed to peace and democracy after the war. One of the followers said, “Who is the power to
revive Japan?...I hope you must be the one with the consciousness of the followers of two greatest
figures.”
